The sounds of vibrant strings, powerful vocals, and rich cultural heritage echoed throughout Downey as the Downey Unified Mariachi Festival brought the community together for a spirited evening of music and celebration. Held this spring, the festival showcased the exceptional talent of student mariachi ensembles from around the LA area, honoring their hard work, musicality, and connection to tradition.

The event featured performances from students in three divisions—Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced—each group demonstrating the skills they’ve honed through participation in Downey Unified’s Mariachi Program. The program is open to all Downey Unified middle and high school students and provides instruction in both singing and instrumental performance, creating a space where young musicians grow in confidence and creativity while embracing Mexican cultural roots.
