As we prepares to welcome students back for the first day of school on August 13, Downey Unified is excited to introduce several new principals who will be leading schools across the District during the 2026-27 school year. These experienced educators and administrators bring a wealth of knowledge, leadership, and dedication to student success as they begin their new roles.
“Strong school leadership plays a critical role in creating positive, supportive, and high-achieving learning environments,” said Superintendent Dr. Brossmer. “We are excited to welcome these talented leaders to their new roles and look forward to the impact they will have on their school communities.”
Elementary School Leadership
Several elementary schools will welcome new principals this year:
- Heather Curcio will serve as Principal of Gauldin Elementary School. Curcio previously served as Vice Principal at Gallatin Elementary School and brings more than 20 years of service in Downey Unified.
- Lindsay Cozart has been named Principal of Ward Elementary School after serving as Vice Principal at Rio San Gabriel Elementary School.
- Sylvia Estrella will transition from Gauldin Elementary School to become Principal of Williams Elementary School, following the retirement of longtime Principal Billie Barrios.
Secondary School Leadership
At the secondary level, three experienced administrators will step into new leadership roles:
- Joe Ortiz has been named Principal of Stauffer Middle School, bringing strong instructional leadership and extensive secondary education experience from Warren High School.
- Kathy Nicassio will serve as Principal of Sussman Middle School, continuing her student-centered leadership following her successful tenure at Doty Middle School. [
- Adrian Quintero will lead Downey High School as Principal. With more than two decades of service in Downey Unified, Quintero brings extensive experience and a deep understanding of the District and community.
Adult Education Leadership
Travis Crow has been named Principal of Downey Adult School following the retirement of Blanca Rochin, who served the Downey Adult School community since 2008. Crow previously served as Dean at both Sussman Middle School and Downey High School and returns to Downey Unified with a strong commitment to supporting adult learners throughout the community.
As the new school year begins, Downey Unified remains committed to providing exceptional learning opportunities for every student.
