Downey High School

Softball: They’ve had an impressive run so far, winning the tough Santa Fe tournament and boasting a record of 9-2. They’re heading into the league season with great momentum and high expectations.

Baseball: With a strong 8-2 record, baseball is also gearing up for their league season. Their momentum should be a huge boost going forward.

Track: The team is performing well, with athletes hitting personal bests at the Redondo Union Track meet. They’re building towards the Conference Championship and the CIF qualifying meet, looking to continue their success.

Lacrosse: Both the Boys’ and Girls’ teams are working hard as they prepare for their league seasons. It’s exciting that Downey High offers lacrosse, especially since it’s one of the fastest-growing sports in the area.

Boys’ Volleyball: Despite a tough loss in the rivalry match against Warren, they’ve had a solid preseason. The upcoming rematch with Warren is crucial for league title hopes and will be a key moment for the team.

Girls’ Beach Volleyball: With an 8-4 overall record and a 2-1 league record, this young team is showing great potential. Their win over Long Beach Poly was particularly impressive, showing they can compete with some of the toughest teams in SoCal.

Boys’ Tennis: They’ve faced some early challenges with weather, having three matches rained out. But with great practices in between, they’ll be well-prepared once the season gets going.

Boys’ Golf: Similarly, the golf team has been dealing with weather issues, but their 500 record shows they’re staying competitive. As the weather improves, they’re sure to be a force in the league.

Girls’ Soccer won the CIF Division 2 Championship!!

  • 1st Round: defeated Vista Murrieta, 2-1
  • 2nd Round: defeated Oak Hills, 1-0
  • CIF Quarterfinals: defeated El Rancho, 2-0
  • CIF Semifinals: defeated Mira Costa, 5-3 in PK’s
  • CIF Championship: defeated Thousand Oaks, 2-1

This is the first Girls’ Soccer CIF Championship in Warren history!

The girls’ soccer team then went on to advance to the CIF State Regional Championship game, where they fell to Patrick Henry High School. 

  • -1st Round: defeated La Costa Canyon, 1-0
  • -CIF State Regional Semifinal: defeated St. Joseph/Santa Maria, 3-2
  • -CIF State Regional Championship: lost to Patrick Henry 

The girls’ soccer team is the CIF State Regional Runner-Up! 

Boys’ Soccer won the CIF Division 3 Championship!! 

  • 1st Round: defeated Fountain Valley, 4-2 in PK’s
  • 2nd Round: defeated Banning, 5-0
  • CIF Quarterfinals: defeated Beaumont, 2-1
  • CIF Semifinals: defeated Torrance, 3-1
  • CIF Championship: defeated Anaheim, 3-0 

This is the first Boys’ Soccer CIF Championship since 2013. 

The boys’ and girls’ won their CIF championships in a thrilling double-header at Veterans Stadium (Long Beach City College). It was a championship Saturday for the ages! 

The boys’ soccer team then went on to advance to the CIF State Regional Semifinals, where they fell to Harvard-Westlake. 

  • 1st Round: defeated Point Loma, 6-5 in PK’s
  • CIF State Regional Semifinal: lost to Harvard-Westlake 

Girls’ basketball lost in the CIF Quarterfinals, falling in a heartbreaking 36-39 defeat to Pilibos. 

  • 1st Round: defeated CAMS, 53-22
  • 2nd Round: defeated Thacher, 43-29 
  • CIF Quarterfinals: lost to Pilibos, 36-39

This was the Bears’ first winning season (15-8) since 2018 and the first playoff run since 2019! We’re excited about the trajectory of this program. 

Boys’ and Girls’ wrestling had 1 female wrestler—Ariele Cazares—and 1 male wrestler—Anthony Peraza—advance to the CIF State Meet. This was the first time in the program history that a male and a female wrestler advanced to the CIF State Meet in the same year! While at the CIF State Meet, Anthony Peraza was awarded with a very prestigious recognition–the Pursuing Victory with Honor medal winner! 

Traditional Competitive Cheer capped their season as the National Runner-Up in Florida. 

Spring sports are underway and off to very competitive starts!

Downey High School

Girls’ Water Polo: Undefeated in league play and now charging into the CIF semi-finals with a shot at the finals at Mt. Sac on Saturday 2/22. It’s been an exciting ride, and they’re looking strong and hope to win the CIF title for Division 2.

Girls’ Basketball: Despite being a young team, they’ve managed to push through the CIF playoffs with 2 impressive victories. They’ll be looking to keep the momentum going in their quarterfinal matchup against Chaparral on Wednesday 2/19.

Boys’ Basketball: A strong season ended with a tough loss in the second round of CIF playoffs, but it’s clear the team made significant progress under Coach Tyler Ellis. With a young squad, they’ll be building on this year’s success going forward.

Soccer Teams: Both the Boys’ and Girls’ teams gave their all in the CIF playoffs, but ultimately fell short in the first round. However, they’re focusing on growth and improvement moving into the off-season.

Wrestling: Both the Boys’ and Girls’ Wrestling teams showed solid performances in the regular season and fought hard in the CIF Dual Meet playoffs. Best of luck to the male wrestler representing Downey at the Masters meet!

Girls’ Water Polo: advanced to the CIF 2nd Round, falling to Fullerton 4-3.

Boys’ Basketball: advanced to the CIF 1st Round, losing a hard-fought battle to Hesperia.

Girls’ Soccer: is in the CIF Quarterfinals, and they will take on El Rancho on Tuesday, February 18.

Warren High School

Boys’ Basketball: is currently 11-10. We are vying for one of the top three spots in the Mid-Cities League with a goal of advancing to and making a deep run in the playoffs.

Girls’ Basketball: is currently 10-5 and 4-1 in league. This is our best record in quite a few years under the leadership of new Head Coach, Daniel Gomez. They’re currently in contention for 1st place in the Mid-Cities League. They are excited to return to the playoffs in the 2025 season.

Boys’ Soccer: is currently in first in the Gateway League, with an 8-5-2 overall record and 3-0 league record. They’re looking to continue this upward trajectory and take this momentum into playoffs.

Girls’ Soccer: is in a tightly contested battle for the top spot in the Gateway League, with four of the five teams in the league all in position to win it all. They are 9-2-2 overall, with highlights coming from our two tournament championships this season—taking home the cup in both the Best in the West Tournament and the NOCCC Tournament.

Girls’ Water Polo: is 9-6 overall and 2-1 in league. This is another team that is looking to advance to the playoffs and make a deep run similar to the run that the boys’ team made to the CIF Division 5 Championship game.

Boys’ Wrestling: is currently holding on to 2nd place in the Gateway League, with a deciding match coming tonight versus cross-town rivals—Downey Vikings.

Girls’ Wrestling: is currently sitting in 1st place in the Gateway league, similarly squaring off against Downey tonight to determine the championship.

Traditional Competitive Cheer: competes in the CIF Championships this Saturday, January 25th. They have also qualified for Nationals for the 2nd consecutive year, so they will be returning to Florida to compete in the Nationals.

Boys’ Basketball: with a 15-8 overall record and a strong 4-1 league mark, the team is in the hunt for the Mid-Cities league championship. They will begin the second round of league play on 1/22 at Warren High School. They’re poised to make the playoffs and represent DHS in CIF.

Girls’ Basketball: recently secured their second victory of the season against Warren on 1/20. With a young squad that continues to improve each game, they’re eager to keep pushing through the rest of their league play.

Boys’ & Girls’ Wrestling: both teams face a huge league showdown at Warren on 1/21. The rivalry with Warren is always intense, and both teams know that a win will keep their hopes alive for a league title in the Gateway League.

Boys’ Soccer: under new Coach Andy Contreras, the team has faced a tough schedule but continues to develop. They’ll host Warren on 1/30 in the second round of league, looking to avenge an earlier loss. With playoff hopes still in play, they’re working to finish the league strong.

Girls’ Soccer: After a heartbreaking double-overtime loss to Paramount, the girls remain in first place in league. Their tough preseason schedule, featuring highly-ranked teams, has prepared them well for the remainder of league play as they aim for a league championship and momentum heading into the playoffs.
