On behalf of the Downey Unified Board of Education, both past and present, and our entire Downey Unified community, we are heartbroken by the passing of former Board Member Martha Sodetani.
Martha dedicated her life to serving others, and her loss is being felt deeply by all who had the privilege of knowing her, working alongside her, and witnessing the profound impact she made on countless members of the Downey community throughout her years of service.
During her 17 years on the Downey Unified Board of Education, Martha was a passionate advocate for students, a trusted community leader, and a steadfast champion for children and families. Yet those who knew her best understood that her legacy was defined not by titles, but by the lives she touched. She devoted her time, energy, and heart to helping others, always guided by compassion, humility, and a deep commitment to making a difference.
Martha’s impact reached far beyond the Board Room. Whether supporting schools, advocating for foster youth and families, volunteering with community organizations, or helping those in need, she approached every opportunity to serve with kindness and genuine care for others. Her work was never motivated by recognition or personal gain. She served because she believed in people, believed in community, and believed that every child deserved the opportunity to succeed.
Serving others was not simply something Martha did. It was who she was.
Throughout her years of service, Martha consistently focused on what was best for students and families. Her leadership was rooted in empathy, sincerity, and an unwavering belief in the potential of every child. The impact of that commitment can be seen not only throughout Downey Unified, but across the broader Downey community she loved so dearly.
As we mourn a tremendous loss, we also celebrate a life that exemplified selflessness, generosity, and a true servant’s heart. Martha’s example of compassion, kindness, and service will continue to inspire future generations.

She will be deeply missed, but her legacy will live on in the students, families, schools, and the community she dedicated her life to serving.
