Welcome to the Downey Unified School District website. As a lifelong educator and proud member of this remarkable school district for over 30 years, it is an incredible honor to now serve as Superintendent. My commitment has always been to ensure that every student receives a top-quality education and is empowered to reach their full potential.

I want to recognize the outstanding leadership of Dr. John A. Garcia, Jr., whose nearly 13 years of service as Superintendent helped shape Downey Unified into the high-performing, student-centered district it is today. His visionary work, especially in Career Technical Education, STEAM, and facilities modernization, has elevated the opportunities available to our students.

Today, our district is thriving — and that success is no accident. It is the result of the ongoing support of our Board of Education, our dedicated staff, our engaged families, and our passionate students. As Superintendent, I aim to build on this momentum, not by making sweeping changes, but by listening carefully, refining what we already do well, and moving forward with intentional focus.

In the year ahead, our efforts will be guided by ambitious new board goals, including increasing college and career readiness, supporting student mental health, closing opportunity gaps, expanding arts and CTE pathways, and embracing innovation through the work of our new Artificial Intelligence (AI) Task Force.

We remain committed to our guiding belief that the “magic” in education happens in the classroom — and that every student deserves the very best we have to offer. I look forward to working together as we continue building a world-class educational experience for every learner in Downey Unified.
