Three years ago, a heartwarming tradition began in Downey Unified—one that has quickly become a favorite among our principals, administrators, and families alike. Each year, just before the school year begins, our leadership team personally visits incoming Transitional Kindergarten (TK) students to welcome them into the Downey Unified family.
Last Friday, we hit the road to surprise every one of our incoming TK students for the 2025–2026 school year with a special delivery… and some big smiles! Each child received a welcome bag that included a “Class of 2039” yard sign and a commemorative t-shirt designed for their handprint—something they can add to each year until they graduate. It was truly magical to see the light in our new students’ eyes as we officially welcomed them into our district.
What started as a small gesture has grown through word of mouth and joyful photos shared across the community. This year, some families were already expecting our visits, and in a few cases, even invited principals inside to help wake up their little ones, turning the surprise into a fun and memorable moment.
For our administrators, it’s a cherished tradition that allows them to personally greet our newest learners and remind every family that their child is seen, celebrated, and valued from day one. It’s just one of many ways Downey Unified shows our commitment to supporting every student, every step of the way.
We’re so excited to officially welcome the Class of 2039 on their first day of school, August 13!
If we didn’t make it to your home, you should have received a phone call on Friday to coordinate the pickup of your welcome bag. And if we missed you, there should have been a note left at your door with a number to call.
