Dear Downey Unified Family,
As many of you may have heard, our neighbors in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) made an announcement that LAUSD will close their schools tomorrow, Monday, August 21 due to the tropical storm that’s traveling through our area. LAUSD campuses cover a wide regional area and one of the reasons shared for this decision was their inability to check all their schools for safety matters prior to students’ arrival in the morning.
We have continued to monitor weather conditions both locally and through the National Weather Service and it has been reported that the worst of this tropical storm will pass the Downey area around 8pm this evening, with winds subsiding by that time and rain transitioning to a light condition.
In contrast to LAUSD, Downey Unified’s schools cover a much smaller geographic region and our committed staff have the ability to canvas all 21 of our sites prior to the start of the school day. With a large window of time from 8pm to 6am, our staff will be visiting each and every school within the district to check for any and all safety related issues on and around each campus.
With these large-scale efforts in place and knowing that the worst of this storm will be over much earlier than the start of the school day, school will be held as usual Monday morning. However, should anything change, you have our commitment that a message will be sent out to families no later than 7am tomorrow informing you of the school(s) that will not be in session or have an altered schedule on Monday.
As the safety of our students and staff is always our highest priority, we will remain in communication with the City of Downey Emergency Services Team, DPD and DFD to ensure we stay updated on local conditions overnight and again, these coordinated efforts will enable us to inform our families should anything change between now and the start of school tomorrow morning.
Attendance tomorrow morning will not be taken until after 9am in an effort to minimize the “rush” to school as we want all of our families to make sure to be cautious and take their time on the way into school.

Escuelas del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Downey abren mañana

Como muchos de ustedes habrán escuchado, nuestros vecinos del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Los Ángeles (LAUSD) anunciaron que LAUSD cerrará sus escuelas mañana lunes 21 de agosto debido a la tormenta tropical que atraviesa nuestra área. Los campus del LAUSD cubren una amplia área regional y una de las razones compartidas para esta decisión fue su incapacidad para revisar todas sus escuelas por cuestiones de seguridad antes de la llegada de los estudiantes por la mañana.
Continuamos monitoreando las condiciones climáticas tanto localmente como a través del Servicio Meteorológico Nacional y se informó que lo peor de esta tormenta tropical pasará el área de Downey alrededor de las 8:00 p. .
En contraste con LAUSD, las escuelas del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Downey cubren una región geográfica mucho más pequeña y nuestro personal comprometido tiene la capacidad de recorrer los 21 sitios antes del comienzo del día escolar. Con un amplio margen de tiempo de 8:00 p. m. a 6:00 a. m., nuestro personal visitará todas y cada una de las escuelas dentro del distrito para verificar cualquier problema relacionado con la seguridad en y alrededor de cada campus.
Con estos esfuerzos a gran escala en su lugar y sabiendo que lo peor de esta tormenta pasará mucho antes del comienzo del día escolar, la escuela se llevará a cabo como de costumbre el lunes por la mañana . Sin embargo, si algo cambia, tiene nuestro compromiso de que se enviará un mensaje a las familias a más tardar a las 7 am de mañana para informarles sobre las escuelas que no estarán en sesión o tendrán un horario modificado el lunes.
Como la seguridad de nuestros estudiantes y personal es siempre nuestra máxima prioridad, permaneceremos en comunicación con el Equipo de Servicios de Emergencia de la Ciudad de Downey, DPD y DFD para asegurarnos de estar actualizados sobre las condiciones locales durante la noche y nuevamente, estos esfuerzos coordinados nos permitirán informar a nuestras familias si algo cambia entre ahora y el comienzo de la escuela mañana por la mañana.
La asistencia mañana por la mañana no se tomará hasta después de las 9 a. m. en un esfuerzo por minimizar la “apresuración” a la escuela, ya que queremos que todas nuestras familias se aseguren de ser cautelosas y tomarse su tiempo en el camino a la escuela.
