Statewide Recognition for DUSD Leaders

At the 2024 ACSA Region XIV Awards, Dr. Cari White of Warren High was named Secondary Principal of the Year, and Doty’s Katharine Nicassio earned Co-Administrator of the Year. Their visionary leadership is helping students thrive.

Downey Scholar Earns National Recognition

Brissa Alvarez of Downey High was named a 2025 Coca-Cola Scholar Semifinalist—one of the most prestigious scholarship programs in the country. Brissa’s achievement shines a spotlight on the academic excellence nurtured at DUSD.

Sussman Educator Named County Teacher of the Year

Alex Santos of Sussman Middle School was named a Los Angeles County 2024 Teacher of the Year. His passion and innovation in the classroom are making waves across the region.

Apple Recognition Grows Across Downey Unified

Gallatin, Williams, Unsworth, Carpenter, Price, and Ward Elementary Schools were named Apple Distinguished Schools. Now, 11 of our 13 elementary schools hold this elite title—proof of our ongoing leadership in educational technology.

Warren Warbots Dominate at LA Regional

The Warren High Warbots took 1st place at the LA Regional Robotics Competition and advanced to the World Championships. Their skills in coding, design, and teamwork are shaping the future.

Robotics Teams Head to State

Elementary robotics teams, including Price Autobots, Alameda’s CyberClaw Tigers, and Lewis’s Wingardium Leviosa, qualified for the California State Championships. The Price Autobots also competed at the VEX Worlds Robotics Competition in Dallas—an incredible accomplishment!

Unified Sports Program Earns Golden Bell Award

DUSD’s inclusive Unified Sports Program was honored with the prestigious Golden Bell Award. This program brings students of all abilities together to build friendships, leadership, and school pride.

Grammy-Level Performance by Downey Mariachi

This school year, Mariachi Diamante de Downey performed at the 2025 GRAMMY Museum Student Showcase and was recorded in a professional studio. These talented musicians are keeping cultural traditions alive while achieving big-time success.

Femineer Program Empowers 260 Students

More than 260 students across middle and high school took part in the growing Femineer Program, designed to engage girls in STEM through hands-on engineering. These future innovators are already making their mark.

Torch Scholars Earn Full-Ride Scholarships

Two AVID students from Warren High School were awarded full scholarships to Northeastern University through the Torch Scholars program. Their determination and DUSD support made a dream come true.

CIF Championship Appearance for Water Polo

The Downey High School Girls Water Polo team battled back to the CIF Southern Section Championship Game. Their strength and determination kept fans on the edge of their seats! Warren High’s Boys Water Polo team also made history with their first appearance in a CIF Championship game. Their journey inspired school spirit and pride across the district.

Students Take Center Stage in The Little Mermaid

Downey High’s production of The Little Mermaid featured students from across the district. The magical performance showcased DUSD’s commitment to the arts and cross-grade collaboration.

As we celebrate these achievements, we also honor the legacy of Dr. John Garcia, who has served as Superintendent of Downey Unified for the past 12 years. Under his leadership, the district has grown stronger, more innovative, and more inclusive—empowering thousands of students to reach their full potential.
