Our annual Intra-District Open Enrollment (formerly School of Choice) is open from Jan.1 to Jan 31. 2024, for the upcoming 2024-25 school year.  Downey parents of students who reside within our district boundaries and wish to have their student(s) attend a Downey Unified school outside of their attendance area, may apply. This does not apply for students who reside outside of the district boundaries and are currently on an inter-district permit.

Applications for Intra-District Open Enrollment is currently open and the deadline to submit online or in person is Jan. 31, 2024. Applications can be found and submitted online through our website (button located below) or a printed copy can be picked up at any of our schools or the district office located on Brookshire Avenue. These documents will be available for pick up during the schools’ or district’s office hours of operation. The district office is open Monday through Friday, from 7:30am to 4:30pm. Please check each school’s office staff to confirm thier hours.

New students (including kindergartners) entering one of our 13 elementary schools for the first time and wishing to apply, must also register at their school of residence.  This will guarantee registration within Downey Unified for the new school year. 

Handwritten applications, those not submitted online, must be submitted in person to our Student Services Department at our district office by the closing deadline of Jan. 31, 2024, at 4:30 p.m. 

Applications are not processed on a first-come basis.  A random, unbiased lottery will be held to place students on an Intra-District Open Enrollment permit waiting list for the 2024-25 school year. Schools may accept students from the established waiting list according to priority, only if space is available.
