Dr. Cari White and Kathy Nicassio celebrated for leadership, innovation, and commitment to student success

Our distinguished leaders, Dr. Cari White and Katharine (Kathy) Nicassio, have been honored by the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Region 14 for their exceptional contributions to education. Dr. White was named Secondary Principal of the Year, and Ms. Nicassio received the Co-Administrator of the Year award. Both were recognized at the ACSA Region 14 Awards Dinner on Thursday, May 1, 2025.
ACSA Region 14 recognizes outstanding administrators who demonstrate exceptional leadership and a deep commitment to educational excellence across more than 20 school and community college districts in Los Angeles County—serving diverse communities from Beverly Hills to Long Beach. Dr. White and Ms. Nicassio mark the seventh Downey Unified administrator to be honored with an ACSA award in the past seven years, a testament to the district’s continued leadership and impact in education.

Dr. Cari White, Principal of Warren High School, has played a key role in launching new programs that give our students more opportunities to succeed. Under her leadership, Warren High expanded its dual enrollment offerings from 2 to 26 sections, giving our students the chance to earn college credit while still in high school. She also introduced a block schedule to give Warren Bears better access to classes during the school day and started the “Pick Your Passion” program to help every student get involved in something meaningful. Dr. White’s focus on building a safe and welcoming campus is a reflection of our belief and motto that “Our Kids Deserve the Best.”

Kathy Nicassio, Vice Principal at Doty Middle School, has been making a difference in our district for nearly 30 years. She has helped lead many important efforts across Downey Unified, especially in improving teaching practices, supporting our students well-being, and helping staff grow professionally. Known for her teamwork, kindness, and deep understanding of how kids learn best, Ms. Nicassio is a trusted leader who helps create a positive and supportive school environment for both Downey Unified students and staff.
“These recognitions are a testament to the incredible work Dr. White and Ms. Nicassio do every day to inspire, lead, and empower those around them,” said Superintendent Dr. Garcia. “They truly represent the heart of Downey Unified – leaders who prioritize opportunity, innovation, and student achievement in everything they do.”
