Downey Unified School District has been named a 2026 National Schools to Watch District, a prestigious honor that recognizes districts where every middle school meets rigorous national standards for excellence. This distinction places Downey Unified among a select group of districts across the country and reflects a shared commitment to providing every student with a high-quality, supportive educational experience during one of the most important stages of their academic journey.
For Downey Unified families, this recognition is especially meaningful. It affirms that no matter which middle school a student attends, they will experience consistent, high-quality instruction and support. Schools recognized through the National Forum Schools to Watch program are intentionally designed to meet the unique needs of students ages 10–15, balancing strong academics with social and emotional support, and creating environments where students feel challenged, connected, and engaged.
Downey Unified earned this distinction after all four middle schools: Doty Middle School, Griffiths Middle School, Stauffer Middle School and Sussman Middle School, were individually recognized as Schools to Watch. Together, these accomplishments reflect not just success at individual campuses, but a districtwide commitment to excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
“Being named a Schools to Watch District is a reflection of the dedication of our educators, staff, students, and families,” said Superintendent Dr. Brossmer. “Middle school is a critical time in a child’s life, and this recognition affirms that our schools are creating environments where students are challenged, supported, and inspired to grow. We are proud to provide a consistent, high-quality experience for every student, and we remain committed to continuous improvement in service of our community.”
Downey Unified will be formally recognized by the National Forum Schools to Watch alongside other distinguished districts from across the United States at the end of June. For the Downey community, this milestone reinforces a continued promise to families: strong schools, meaningful support, and opportunities for every student to thrive.
