At Downey High School’s Planning Day last Thursday, our team did a little PD on takeaways we had from this past Summer Institute. One interesting lesson we learned was called the “Where I Come From” poem. We modeled it with our Elective Site Team and then took all the submissions and combined them to make a collective “Where We Are From” Viking AVID Poem, which we wanted to share with all of you!

An AVID Site Team Poem

I once read “Survival is insufficient”,

At Downey High, I teach science with purpose and true meanings,

I coach the cardinal and white with passion, building futures and beginnings

20 years, I have been a Viking

I have pain, but at least I’m walking

If you need help, you’d better be asking

I am a teacher, 25 years strong,

A Viking in spirit, where I’ve belonged,

At my own high school, I’ve marched all along.

At the Viking Ship, I teach Future Teachers and AVID strong through and through

26 I’ve been a Viking and watched them grow, and I’m so proud of them,

In cardinal and gold, I give my best to all.

I am from a school where the Viking stands tall,

For 29 years, I’ve answered education’s call,

In cardinal and gold, I give my best to all.

For 30 years, I’ve told them to follow their passion….

Watching them grow and learn to be bold….

Especially at this place of Cardinal and Gold

A culture of service

Is the Viking way

The cardinal and white is where my heart stays

With collaboration, our goals take flight,

Cardinal strong in red and white,

A Viking spirit fuels our might.

Hail to Downey High School, we pledge our hearts to you

Our fearless leader, we believe in too

Here, we’re AVID strong through and through
