Athletics Program
Teamwork and Perseverance
By joining a Downey Unified athletic team, your student will learn the importance of hard work, dedicated practice, and even sometimes how to fail and learn from it. These skills matter not only on the field or court but also in their academics and every day lives.
Our coaches push our student-athletes to reach their potentials and compete with confidence and humility. DUSD athletes work together to build each other up and meet their goals.
Benefits of Being a Student Athlete
Research shows that people who play high school sports get better jobs with better pay. The lessons learned in athletics, combined with the knowledge that student-athletes must do well in school to participate, motivates their persistence, and drive for success.
Expectations of our Student Athletes
By participating in athletics, students will learn cooperation, respect, sportsmanship, hard work and commitment to others. Since participation in athletics is voluntary, a student-athlete’s participation in school-sponsored athletics is a privilege. As a privilege, student-athletes are held accountable academically and behaviorally throughout the entire year and are expected to conduct themselves in a way that promotes a positive image of our school, our community and themselves.
Downey Unified student-athletes are required to represent, uphold and practice the principles of Victory with Honor. This program is based on the “Six Pillars of Character” of the CHARACTER COUNTS! Program that is practiced district-wide. Our coaches instill and nurture the concepts of responsibility, discipline and teamwork in each student-athlete.
