We’re proud to share that every Downey Unified school—20 out of 20—has been recognized by California PBIS (CA PBIS) for the successful implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports.

Recognition breakdown:

  • 4 Platinum
  • 2 Gold
  • 13 Silver
  • 1 Bronze

This achievement reflects years of thoughtful work by our School Culture Teams to make PBIS the backbone of safe, inclusive, and thriving classrooms. PBIS is a research-based, multi-tiered framework that supports student behavior, mental health, equity, and academic achievement.

How We Got Here

Districtwide, teams:

  • Built clear behavior matrices aligned to each school’s values.
  • Explicitly taught expectations to students and staff for consistency and clarity.
  • Implemented positive reinforcement systems that celebrate progress and build belonging.
  • Used the Tiered Fidelity Inventory (TFI) to assess implementation and set site-specific goals.
  • Engaged in ongoing professional learning focused on mental health and equity.
  • Strengthened our Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) so all students receive behavioral, social-emotional, and academic supports.

Why It Matters

When expectations are clear and reinforced positively, classrooms are calmer, relationships strengthen, and instructional time increases. When students feel safe, seen, and supported, they’re more engaged and better able to reach their full potential. These awards are a testament to that work—and to the collective effort of our administrators, teachers, counselors, clinical school therapists, school psychologists, campus support teams, support staff, students, and families.

“This recognition across all 20 schools reflects our community’s shared commitment to safe, inclusive learning environments where every student can thrive,” said Superintendent Dr. Roger Brossmer. “Thank you to our School Culture Teams and to every staff member whose daily efforts make these results possible.”

We’re celebrating this milestone—and staying focused on what matters most: students. Thank you to our families and community partners for your continued support.
