**BREAKING NEWS!**
We are thrilled to announce that our outstanding AVID Seniors, Joshua Barrera and America Ramirez, have each won the prestigious Torch Scholarship from Northeastern University in Boston, MA. This full-ride scholarship is worth over $360,000 per student, and Northeastern only awards 15 of these scholarships nationwide—two of which are right here at Warren High!

The Process
To earn the scholarship, both students were nominated and had to complete the Common Application to the university. They were then selected as two of the 50 finalists from all applicants across the nation. As finalists, they completed a math assessment and engaged with various academic materials to prepare for a group exercise during the interview day. This intense five-hour interview took place via Zoom from 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM. Impressively, both students stayed past 4 PM on that day to attend optional meetings, ask additional questions, and write thank-you messages. After completing their interviews at school, they went home and wrote an essay responding to a prompt from a lecture they attended that day. They submitted this essay the same night, even though it wasn’t due for another two days, as they wanted to leave a strong impression. In total, they endured a rigorous eight-hour interview day without taking a lunch break!
Overcoming Adversity
Joshua and America have both faced significant challenges in their lives but have persevered with the support of their AVID program and by seizing numerous opportunities, such as Advanced Placement courses, Dual Enrollment, and other resources, to propel themselves forward. Their resilience and hard work are now being recognized. Congratulations to Joshua, who plans to study Computer Science, and America, who intends to pursue Pre-Medicine.
One more exciting note: According to the university representative, our students were the “fan favorites” of the group this year!
Mrs. Hanohano stopped by five different stores to find real Boston Creme pies to celebrate the amazing news! We are so proud of you Bears.
