The CIF All-Academic Awards for this year were recently released. We would like to take a moment to recognize Warren High School’s phenomenal teams because these accomplishments definitely deserve to be celebrated.

The CIF Southern Section consists of 558 schools. It is by far the largest section in the state of California. The next largest section is the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section with 198 schools. Every school in the CIF Southern Section has the opportunity to nominate their teams for the CIF All-Academic Team Awards. These teams must epitomize what it means to be a student-athlete, flourishing on the playing field and thriving in the classroom. The competition for these awards is so fierce.

To be considered, teams must have at least five student-athletes with a minimum of a 3.0 GPA average (4.0 scale) in the first semester or first two quarters of the school year. The highest team GPA in each sport category by CBED enrollment determines the winner. Schools are divided into two CBED enrollment categories, 1500 and above and 1499 and below. The team with the highest GPA in each enrollment category for each sport receives the award.

Interestingly, the team GPA must be calculated on a 0-4 (non-weighted) scale. Some of our teams would have significantly higher team GPAs if they would allow us to use a weighted scale. With that being said, these team GPAs are truly phenomenal!

We are incredibly proud of these programs, student-athletes, and coaches for helping create a culture of excellence in their sport and in their studies.

Below are the results:

  • Softball                                 3.784     2nd in the CIF Southern Section   (Runner-Up to Villa Park)
  • Boys’ Cross Country        3.822     6th in the CIF Southern Section
  • Boys’ Golf                            3.711     8th in the CIF Southern Section
  • Girls’ Cross Country         3.708     19th in the CIF Southern Section

  • Girls’ Volleyball                 3.579     24th in the CIF Southern Section
  • Boys’ Tennis                       3.543     28th in the CIF Southern Section
  • Girls’ Soccer                       3.500     37th in the CIF Southern Section

Additionally, CIF selected two of our athletes as the Male and Female All-Academic Athlete of the Year! Any school that nominates candidates is awarded 1 male and 1 female, as long as they meet the extensive criteria.

Daniel Castillo   Boys’ Soccer       SkillsUSA—Quiz Bowl (State Qualifier)                                     4.96 State-Weighted GPA                #1 Class Rank

Emily Gordillo   Girls’ Soccer       Unified Sports—LA Galaxy Unified Soccer Qualifier            4.05 District-Weighted GPA                #74 Class Rank

These senior student-athletes had to earn exceptional GPAs, serve as pivotal members of their teams, and participate in at least one recognized extracurricular program aside from their sport.

Our teams are performing incredibly well, and this is yet another example of their excellence!

If you haven’t watched our spring sports in action yet, please come out to support our Bears.

  • Our Boys’ Volleyball team is currently on the Watch List for Division 3, led by senior outside hitter—Sergio Garcia—who has already signed with Concordia University to continue his athletic and academic pursuits next school year.
  • Boys’ Tennis is currently undefeated in league, absolutely dominating league opponents (18-0 vs Norwalk, 16-2 vs Downey, and 14-4 vs Gahr).
  • Boys’ Golf is yet another team that remains undefeated in the league, led by a junior standout—Matt Robles—and a freshman phenom—Jacob Palomares.
  • Our boys’ and girls’ track and field teams are repeatedly posting record-breaking marks.
  • On the boys’ side, the team is led by thrower Jaylon Wells whose mark of 58’2 in the shot put ranks him 2nd All-Time at Warren, 2nd in CIF Division 1, and 3rd in CIF State while his mark of 158’1.5 in discus lands him 2nd All-Time at Warren and 4th in CIF Division 1.
  • The Boys’ Track and Field Team is currently ranked 9th in CIF Division 1 per ca.milesplit.com. This ranking puts us at the top with perennial powerhouses!
  • On the girls’ side of the program, our team is led by distance runner Michelle Huerta—a UCSD commit. This past weekend, she shattered her PR in the 3,200 with a blazing fast time of 10:53. This mark catapults her into a small group of top CIF Southern Section and California performers—77th in the US. Only 2 others have run faster in Bear history; only 4 Bears have ever broken the 11-minute barrier.
