Students in Downey High School’s newly established Social Media Marketing class are stepping beyond the classroom and into the real world through an exciting collaboration with TRU Bowl, a California-based superfood bar that specializes in customizable açaí bowls, smoothies, and juices made with fresh, nutrient-rich ingredients. As part of this hands-on learning experience, students partnered with the business to develop, produce, and promote a brand-new menu item created exclusively for the school community: “The Viking Smoothie.”

To further encourage student participation, the business will offer a 10% discount to all students who purchase the exclusive item.
“This project is about giving students authentic, real-world experience,” said Lucia Rios, Social Media Marketing teacher at Downey High School. “They’re creating, collaborating, and seeing their ideas come to life in a way that has real impact.”
Rios brings a diverse background in marketing, with experience both internationally and locally, including work in the Communications Office of the Downey Unified School District Superintendent. This expertise has helped shape the course into a forward-thinking program that reflects today’s digital landscape and the expanding opportunities available.
While some students in the class are interested in pursuing careers in marketing, the course is designed for all students. Through projects like this, students develop highly transferable skills such as storytelling, communication, collaboration, and digital literacy. Skills that are essential for job searches, college interviews, and success in any career pathway.
The Social Media Marketing class was introduced this year to meet the demands of a changing media environment, where digital storytelling, branding, and online engagement are essential to every business’ growth and sustainability. Due to strong interest and its immediate impact, the course will expand into a year-long offering for juniors in the upcoming school year.
This course is part of Downey High School and Downey Unified’s broader Career Technical Education (CTE) programs, which integrate rigorous academics with real-world, hands-on learning experiences. CTE pathways are designed to help students explore careers, gain practical skills, and prepare for both college and the workforce by engaging in meaningful, applied projects that mirror real industry experiences.
“This partnership is a true example of what makes Downey special. By working alongside our local business community, our students are gaining hands-on experience that brings learning to life and empowers them to see themselves as creators, leaders, and future professionals,” said Jessica Saucedo, Assistant Principal at Downey High School.
The collaboration highlights the power of community partnerships in education, giving students the opportunity to apply classroom learning in meaningful and tangible ways while supporting local businesses.
