Downey High School’s EPIC Jazz Choir made history this summer, earning a gold medal-top level and third place in the world at the prestigious European Choir Games & Grand Prix of Nations in Aarhus, Denmark. They were one of only a handful of U.S. teams to compete.

Before the competition, the choir performed across six European countries, including a featured show in Cluj and Timisoara, Romania. Their talent, stage presence, and precision earned international praise and a spot on the global podium.

Superintendent Dr. Roger Brossmer said, “This is what being globally competitive looks like. Our students stepped onto a world stage and proved they can rise to any challenge. Our EPIC Jazz Choir showed the world what Downey Unified is all about: excellence, passion, and opportunity.”

Led by Mr. Cory Olariu, the EPIC Jazz Choir stood out among elite choirs from around the world.

Board of Education President Linda Saldaña added, “This was more than a performance; it was a cultural exchange and life-changing opportunity. Our students represented Downey Unified with pride, professionalism, and passion.”

This achievement reflects the strength of Downey Unified’s Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) program and its commitment to preparing students for success on any stage.
