Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming part of everyday life and education. At Downey Unified, we believe AI should enhance learning, support teachers, and prepare students for the future while protecting privacy, promoting academic integrity, and keeping meaningful human relationships at the center of education.
These guidelines explain how AI will be used responsibly across our schools, what students will learn about AI, and how families can support safe and ethical AI use.
What is AI?
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a technology that enables machines to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as understanding language, recognizing patterns, making decisions, and generating content.
AI systems process data (which can include text, images, and numbers) and utilize algorithms to analyze this information. They often learn and improve over time through a process known as machine learning. As a result, AI systems can produce valuable outputs, ranging from language translation to the creation of original content, which can influence both the real and digital worlds.

At Downey Unified, we believe the best way to prepare for the future is to start before change arrives. As artificial intelligence continues to reshape education and the workforce, the District created an AI Task Force to thoughtfully explore how these tools can support teaching and learning while reflecting our values and educational goals.
The task force brings together educators, administrators, and technology leaders to develop guidance, resources, and best practices that help students and staff build AI literacy in a safe, responsible, and meaningful way.

The AI Learning Journey
Artificial intelligence is introduced thoughtfully and intentionally throughout a student’s education. As students grow, so do their opportunities and responsibilities when using AI. From building foundational digital citizenship skills in the early grades to applying AI as a tool for research, creativity, and problem-solving in high school, our expectations evolve to support safe, ethical, and meaningful learning at every stage.
TK–2
Notice & Name
Help students recognize what AI is and where they see it in everyday life (e.g., Siri, YouTube suggestions). Support them in understanding the difference between technology tools and human thinking. With guidance and support, students can explore and prompt AI to create pictures that are connected to what they are learning.
Grades 3–5
Interact & Question
Students safely use age-appropriate AI tools (like voice assistants) while teaching them how information is collected and used. Encourage students to ask questions about how AI gets its answers. Students explore patterns and can integrate with computer science instruction.
Grades 6–8

Will my student have to know how to use AI?
The CDE provides progressions for students in grades K-12, moving from simple identification of features and capabilities of AI to the creation and design of complex, critical AI applications and models. Included in these progressions is the evolving evaluation of outputs and exploration of ethical impact:

Ongoing professional development and training in AI literacy should be available to all district employees, including teachers, support staff, and administrators. The district must provide resources to ensure all staff are equipped to use AI responsibly, efficiently, and confidently in their roles. This includes access and training on AI tools tailored to various roles, from classified, certificated, and management, ensuring that AI adoption enhances the professional capacity of all Employees.
All students will receive instruction in digital citizenship skills during Digital Citizenship Week each October. This training will include age-appropriate learning on AI, including how AI works, responsible use, privacy protections, academic integrity, and recognizing bias or misinformation.
Are there guidelines for how teachers use AI in their classrooms?
Just as academic integrity guides student use of AI, professional integrity guides how employees use AI in their work. All staff members are responsible for the accuracy, completeness, and appropriateness of AI-assisted work products. AI-generated content used must be reviewed and verified by the responsible employee before distribution. Additionally, employees should disclose AI assistance when producing work that will be used in consequential decision-making.
Can teachers upload student work to AI for grading or feedback?
No. Teachers may not upload student work to AI tools for grading/feedback—even if de‑identified—unless it’s a district‑approved platform or designated district‑level AI system vetted for privacy (e.g., specified formative tools). Assessment remains a human‑guided process aligned to district standards and rubrics.
Is AI considered cheating?
AI is considered cheating when:
- It replaces original thinking on assignments meant to measure individual learning
- It is used without teacher permission
- It is used without required citation or acknowledgment
How will teachers prevent cheating or overuse of AI?
Teachers provide clear guidelines on when AI is allowed and when it is not. Lessons include digital citizenship, academic honesty, and understanding that AI can make mistakes.
How can AI help my student?
Additionally, AI tools can make classrooms more accessible and inclusive when used in to differentiate. Features like speech-to-text, captioning, transcription, and language translation help students with disabilities and multilingual learners fully participate. AI can generate personalized learning materials, such as worksheets, quizzes, and reading assignments, aligned with students’ learning goals, strengths, and interests.
How can I support my child’s AI use at home?
Parents can:
- Ask children what tools they use at school
- Encourage them to think critically about AI answers
- Remind them never to share personal information online
- Use district‑approved tools rather than public AI platforms
We also provide parent workshops and resources throughout the year.
Can students and teachers use non-approved AI tools?
Acceptable tools include but are not limited to Microsoft Copilot, Padlet, Canva, Adobe. As more tools embed AI into their ecosystem, it is essential that staff and educators use those tools that have been vetted for security, privacy, accessibility, and procurement compliance. Using unvetted tools can expose student and staff data, create legal risk through unfavorable terms of service, and undermine high-quality instructional materials and practices. Centralizing tool use also enables proper auditing, support, professional development, and equity of access across schools and classrooms.
How will my child’s information be protected?
Protecting student and employee data is a priority for Downey Unified. In conformity with federal, state, and district policies and regulations, Downey Unified executes the following steps to protect and support privacy:
- Inform students, parents, and staff about how AI tools use data and obtain explicit consent when necessary.
- Provide educators and staff with professional development on data privacy, secure AI use, and the identification of potential breaches.
- Utilize encrypted systems and multi-factor authentication security verification systems.
- Implement regular security audits to protect digital infrastructure.
- Establish clear data governance protocols for AI systems that process employee records, financial data, vendor information, and operational workflows.
Can teachers use their personal account for AI work?
No. Teachers should only access AI via district devices and district accounts for all work‑related use
Should I trust the research AI provides to my student?
AI can hallucinate, fabricate citations, or omit critical context. Output should be verified with vetted curriculum resources, primary sources, and authoritative references before being used in instruction, communication, etc. URLs, images, infographics, and diagrams must be verified with independent sources. AI-generated figures, dates, legal references, policy citations, financial data, etc. must be verified against official district records and authoritative sources before inclusion in any district document or decision-making process.
How will my student receive AI education at school?
Instead of a standalone class, AI literacy is embedded across subjects, focusing on understanding how AI works, its limitations, and its societal impact.

Students should follow instructions from the teacher on acceptable uses of AI on a per assignment basis. Acceptable use is outlined in general in the Generative AI Use Continuum. The level of AI usage and specific tools is defined by the teacher.
How do I know if I can use this AI tool?
- Is it district‑approved and accessed with a district account on a district device?
- Will I avoid uploading any PII or sensitive data (unless within a vetted enterprise system)?
- Will I verify outputs for accuracy, accessibility, and bias before sharing?
If “yes” to all, proceed; otherwise, submit a work order for vetting or adjust your approach.
How might artificial intelligence tools be used in education?
AI tools are not meant to replace teachers but rather to support and enhance their work. Teachers will continue to play a crucial role in designing learning experiences, providing guidance and feedback, and fostering the social and emotional development of students.
What are the potential benefits of using AI tools in my child's education?
AI tools can offer several benefits, such as providing personalized learning experiences tailored to your child’s needs, offering immediate feedback and support, and helping teachers to identify areas where your child may need additional assistance. AI can also expose children to rapidly evolving technology and help them develop important skills for the future.
What student or staff information is never allowed in public AI tools?
Do not include PII such as names, IDs, addresses, assessment scores, IEP details, rosters, grades, transcripts, sensitive emails, employee records, financial/vendor/legal data, or any content that could identify an individual. Use only district‑approved/enterprise tools when handling sensitive data. Report suspected exposure to your site administrator.
Who do teachers contact about tool approval or questions?
Teachers must submit a Technology Department work order for tool vetting or support. For policy or integrity questions, consult site leadership and the relevant Board Policies.
What should a DUSD staff member do if they suspect a data exposure?
Report it immediately to your site administrator and follow district incident procedures.
