r her to develop joy and passion for learning.

In Downey Unified, middle school students interested in pursuing enrichment in performing arts have the opportunity to take part in the Musical Theatre Conservatory (MTC), a free after-school program that offers lessons in voice, dance and musical theatre. In addition to attending classes, participating students also work on semester productions for fall and spring performances.

Musical theatre programs can help students in a variety of ways, including the following:

Improved reading comprehension — As students continue to read scripts, they not only improve their fluency but also develop a deeper understanding of what they read as they learn more about appropriate tone and intonation. This can then translate into the classroom setting when they read various texts and passages.

Enhanced concentration + problem-solving skills — The musical theatre program causes students to increase their focus as they work to know their lines and actions for specific scenes, which can create better habits in other areas of study, as well. When unpredictable situations arise during rehearsals or performances, students must find ways to work through the issues, allowing them to develop enriched life skills that help prepare them for their future pursuits.

Expanded imagination + creativity — Musical theatre provides students with an outlet to express themselves in unique ways and explore different methods of reaching solutions and achieving goals without the stress and pressure of doing so the “right” way. After all, in musical theatre, there is not merely one specific way of doing things.

Increased self-discipline — Students in musical theatre must follow strict schedules and develop organizational habits to ensure that they are prepared for each rehearsal and performance. They also need to make sure they are taking time to memorize their lines and practice on their own time outside of class. Doing so helps students develop skills that will carry over into other areas of their lives.

Higher self-esteem — Performing in front of others and learning to give, as well as receive, constructive feedback can turn into positive change that helps students boost their self-confidence and prepares them to be more receptive to feedback from teachers and future employers. Additionally, students are able to realize their potential for success as they continue to improve themselves.

Increased social awareness — Musical theatre helps to foster social awareness as students are exposed to a variety of social issues, events and cultures portrayed in the scripts for their productions. This allows them to develop stronger empathy and understanding for others and become more accepting of diversity in real-world settings.
