February is Career Technical Education (CTE) Month, and in the Downey Unified School District, we’re proud to offer meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that prepare students for success, both in college and in their careers.

What is Career Technical Education?

Career Technical Education integrates rigorous academics with real-world skills. In CTE courses, students explore careers, gain practical experience, and build the foundations they need for lifelong success. Rather than learning concepts in isolation, students apply their knowledge to real tasks, projects, and workplace challenges.

CTE Starts Early at Downey Unified

At Downey Unified, students begin exploring CTE as early as middle school, giving them the chance to discover interests, passions, and talents long before graduation. By the time they reach high school, students can select a career pathway that aligns with their strengths and future goals.

Future-Ready Skills

Our CTE programs/pathways prepare students to become adaptable, confident problem-solvers who know how to leverage today’s technology to meet the challenges of tomorrow. Students learn how to:

  • Communicate and collaborate effectively
  • Apply critical thinking
  • Use industry-standard tools and equipment
  • Engage in hands-on, applied learning

High School Pathways With Real Outcomes

Each high school pathway is industry-focused and typically includes 2–3 courses, ending with a capstone experience. Through these pathways, students can earn college credit, gain industry certifications, and/or begin building professional networks, all while completing their regular high school schedule.

Downey Unified offers pathways in a wide range of industries, including:

  • Engineering
  • Health & Medical Biotechnology / Patient Care
  • Food Science & Culinary Arts
  • Automotive Technology
  • Construction & Welding
  • Graphic Design & Visual/Commercial Arts
  • Film, Video & Multimedia Production
  • Business, Education, Game Programming, and much more!

From creative fields to technical trades, students have the opportunity to explore what excites them and prepare for meaningful careers.

Relevant Education for a Lifetime

CTE is more than just skill-building. It’s about giving students confidence, direction, and opportunities. Whether a student plans to attend college, enter the workforce, or pursue specialized training, CTE provides a strong foundation for the future.
