Sussman Middle School’s Advanced Drama students delivered an outstanding performance in their latest production, Beggar Prince, showcasing the kind of talent, dedication, and teamwork that truly bring theatre to life. From opening night to the final curtain, students impressed audiences with their energy, creativity, and professionalism, both on stage and behind the scenes.
This year’s play, Beggar Prince, followed the story of Prince Edmund, a self-centered royal who believes he’s above everyone else. After arrogantly rejecting every potential bride, his mother, Queen Germaine, takes matters into her own hands and declares that he must marry the very next person she sees, no exceptions. That “person” turns out to be Lil, a mysterious beggar who quickly turns Edmund’s world upside down. Stripped of his privilege and forced into unfamiliar circumstances, Edmund embarks on an unexpected journey of self-discovery, learning who he truly is along the way.
Advanced Drama is a capstone, production-based course and the only class in the program that stages a full-scale play. While Drama 6 and Drama 7/8 build foundational skills, Advanced Drama students take the lead in every aspect of production, from acting and directing to set design, lighting, and stage management. The course emphasizes collaboration, leadership, and real-world theatre practices, allowing students to run rehearsals, manage crews, and mentor peers. Their hard work culminates in a public performance that highlights both artistic growth and ensemble excellence.
Families and community members are invited to enjoy photos from both opening and closing night, capturing the unforgettable moments of this production.
