WHS Athletics: A Tradition of Excellence

At Warren High School, it is both a privilege and an honor to be a BEAR. Our athletics program is built on a strong tradition of teamwork, dedication, and school pride. We offer a wide range of sports for both boys and girls, including football, rugby, flag football, soccer, baseball, and basketball.

Participating in high school athletics provides students with numerous benefits beyond the playing field. Athletes develop discipline, leadership, and time management skills while building lifelong friendships and learning the value of perseverance. Our coaches and staff are committed to supporting student-athletes in both their academic and athletic growth, helping them become well-rounded individuals prepared for success in all areas of life.

At Warren High, being part of the athletics program means more than just competing — it means embodying the spirit of a BEAR: Bold, Engaged, Accountable, and Resilient.

Samantha Miyahara

Athletics Director
smiyahara@dusd.net

Samantha Miyahara is the Athletic Director at Warren High School, where she is now in her 11th year. She spent her first three years as the Activities Director before moving into her current role, which she has proudly held for the past eight years.

Before joining Warren, Ms. Miyahara was the co-Athletic Director and a swim and water polo coach at Marina High School.

Sports have always been a major part of Ms. Miyahara’s life. She credits athletics for shaping her character and leadership. Growing up, she played just about every sport before discovering her passion for water polo and swimming. Her athletic journey led her to UCLA, where she played water polo and helped her team earn a National Championship during an undefeated season. Prior to that, at Long Beach City College, she competed in both sports, earning a State Championship in water polo and All-American honors in swimming. After college, Ms. Miyahara continued to challenge herself as an open-water swimmer, even participating in the world record relay for the Catalina Crossing.

These days, her favorite role is being a sports mom. She loves cheering on her two kids as they pursue their own athletic dreams.

How to Join a Sport

In order to participate in an extracurricular sport, all students must receive athletic clearance. Students must also submit the Physical Evaluation Form, Athletic Clearance Form, and Extra-Curricular Waiver. Parents are also highly encouraged to purchase extra accident and injury insurance for their child, as DUSD does not provide insurance coverage.

Athletes are held to the highest standards academically, below are the other requirements:

  • 2.0 Grade Point Average
  • ASB Card
  • Physical Exam required for athletic participation
  • Insurance Coverage Required (available for purchase through school)

Student Accident & Sickness Insurance

Even though we take precautions to protect your child from injuries, accidents can and do happen while students are participating in school activities on campus, on school trips, and during extra-curricular activities and sports.

Although DUSD does not carry medical or dental insurance for your child, a variety of low-cost medical/dental insurance plans are available through Myers-Stevens & Toohey & Co., Inc.
