Mr. Garry Naval
Welcome to Unsworth Elementary School. I am honored to be a part of our Unsworth Family. The trust you place in our school is not something we take lightly. Our most important work will be to ensure that our students, teachers, staff, and you our Unsworth families have the support needed to thrive. Our work will focus on creating an environment where your child’s academic growth and safety are always a priority, where we work to strengthen our school wide programs, and where we build a positive relationship with our Unsworth community. What is a School-Home Compact?
A School-Home Compact for Achievement is an agreement that parents, students, and teachers develop together. It explains how parents and teachers will work together to make sure all our students reach grade level standards.
Effective compacts:
- Link to goals of the school improvement plan.
- Focus on student learning skills.
- Describe how teachers will help students develop those skills using high quality instruction.
- Share strategies parents can use at home.
- Explain how teachers and parents will communicate with regard to student progress.
- Describe opportunities for parents to volunteer, observe, and participate in the classroom.
Jointly Developed
The parents and staff of Unsworth Elementary School developed this School-Parent Compact for Achievement. Meetings are held on a yearly basis to review the Compact and make changes based on student needs. Parents are welcome to contribute at any time. If you would like to volunteer, participate, or observe in the classroom, please contact the school.

District Goal
By June 2027, 90-100% of all students will perform at grade level or higher and upon graduation meet the requirements for entrance into the UC and CSU system or have developed skills to be career ready.
School Goals
By June 2027, we will continue to increase the number of students reaching proficiency in mathematics and reading.
Our focus in reading will be:
- Be able to ask and answer oral and written questions about fiction and nonfiction text
- Use and apply a variety of reading strategies in whole group instruction and in small group instruction
- Learn and use academic vocabulary to explain concepts, share ideas and build on ideas of others
Our focus in mathematics will be to:
- Develop a deeper understanding of number sense (place value and operations)
- Explain their thinking in solving problems
- Use math in real world situations (money, time, schedules)
At School
Unsworth staff will work with students and their families to support students’ success in reading and math. Some of our key connections with families will be:
- Communicate regularly with parents regarding current academic programs and be accessible to parents/guardians to discuss questions or concerns
- Provide materials and information to help parents
support the school’s academic program - Offer Parent Workshops:
- Literacy – Provide parents with strategies and resources on how to read with or listen to their child read and interact with text
- Math – Provide parents with strategies and resources on how to help their child solve real- world math problems in a variety of ways
- Technology – Provide parents with the opportunity to learn how to use
At Home
Unsworth Elementary School parents joined staff to develop ideas about how families can support students’ success in reading and math. Our parents/guardians will:
- Discuss and review your child’s schoolwork nightly and contact the teacher with questions or concerns. Make appointments as needed, especially after the first report card.
- Read and use classroom materials and information to support your child’s learning at home.
- Read with or listen to your child read every day.
- Attend the family fun literacy workshops and use the strategies learned to improve my child’s literacy skills
- Involve your child in solving real-world math problems every day.
- Attend the family fun math workshop and use the strategies learned to improve my child’s
mathematic skills.
Student Responsibilities
Unsworth students know the importance of being responsible. A responsible student will come to school every day on time, prepared, and ready to learn. To make connections between learning at home and at school, students will:
- Take home, review, and discuss schoolwork and materials nightly with parents/guardians.
- Ask for help when they have trouble with their schoolwork.
- Participate in classroom discussions and group work.
- Read to and discuss the text with an adult for 20-30 minutes every day.
- Apply strategies used in class to solve real-world math problems
- Exemplify and model the Six Pillars of Character, everywhere and all the time.
Engagement Policy
Unsworth Elementary School recognizes that parents and guardians are their children’s first and most influential teachers. We believe that continued parental involvement in a child’s education contributes greatly to student achievement and conduct. This Parent and Family Engagement Policy is an integral component of our school plan to promote a meaningful partnership between the school and the home.
Part 1: General Expectations
Unsworth Elementary School agrees to implement the following requirements:
- The school will jointly develop with parents, and make accessible to parents, the Parent and Family Engagement Policy that the school and parents of participating children agree to uphold.
- The school will notify parents about the School Parent and Family Engagement Policy in an understandable and uniform format and, to the extent practicable, will distribute this policy to parents in English and Spanish.
- The school will revisit the School Parent and Family Engagement Policy yearly to meet the changing needs of parents and the school.
- The school will make the School Parent and Family Engagement Policy available to the local community through a website link.
- The school will adopt the Home-School compact as a component of its Parent and Family Engagement Policy.
- The school will provide accessibility and opportunities for parents with limited English proficiency, parents with disabilities, and parents of migratory students.
- The school agrees to be governed by the following definition of parental involvement, and will carry out programs, activities, and procedures in accordance with this definition:
Parental involvement means the participation of parents, including those with disabilities and/or with limited English proficiency, in regular and meaningful communication involving student academic learning and other school activities, to ensure:
- That parents play an integral role in assisting their child’s learning.
- That parents are encouraged to be actively involved in their child’s education, including the Home-School Compact.
- That parents are full partners in their child’s education and are included, as appropriate, in decision-making and on advisory committees to assist in the education of their child.
- The carrying out of other activities, such as those described in section 1118 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), which provides equal educational opportunities for all students.
Part 2: Policy Implementation
Unsworth Elementary School Parent and Family Engagement Actions
Unsworth Elementary School will take the following actions to involve parents in the joint development and joint agreement of its Parent and Family Engagement Policy under section 1118(b) of the ESEA:
- The following materials will be made available to parents: School’s Parent and Family Engagement Policy and the School-Parent Compact.
- The School Site Council will approve these documents at their final meeting each year in preparation for the upcoming year.
Unsworth Elementary School will take the following actions to make the Engagement Policy accessible to parents of participating children and the local community:
- A hard copy of the school’s Parent and Family Engagement Policy will be available to any parent upon request.
- The Parent and Family Engagement Policy will be posted on our official school website for the community to view.
- The policy will be sent via Parent Square.
Unsworth Elementary School will review yearly and update periodically its Engagement Policy to meet the changing needs of parents and the school:
- There shall be an annual needs assessment of the effectiveness of Unsworth’s Title I parent involvement policies and instructional programs.
- Based on the findings of the needs assessment, program modifications shall be made if necessary.
- Unsworth will review the results of the survey with the School Site Council and report to parents at the Fall Annual Title I meeting.
- The information gathered will be used to complete the annual Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) evaluation and to develop the Parent Involvement section of the SPSA.
- This document will be updated each year and included in the SPSA.
Unsworth Elementary School will convene an annual meeting to inform parents of the following:
- That their child’s school participates in Title I.
- The requirements of Title I and their school’s participation in Title I.
- Their rights to be involved as described in detail in the Parent Student Guide.
Unsworth will hold a flexible number of meetings at varying times and provide childcare, paid with Title I funding, as long as these services relate to parental involvement.
Unsworth Elementary School will provide information about Schoolwide Title I Programs to parents of participating children in a timely manner:
- Invitations will be sent home in English and Spanish with plenty of notice, along with Parent Square notifications.
- Childcare may be provided as needed.
- Spanish translation will be provided at parent functions.
- Parent surveys will be given to determine parent interest and needs.
Unsworth Elementary School will provide information about Title I programs to parents of participating children in a timely manner:
- A Fall meeting will be held.
- Written notification will be sent home with all Title I students explaining the program.
Unsworth Elementary School will provide to parents of Title I students a description and explanation of the curriculum being used, the forms of academic assessment used to measure student progress, and the proficiency levels students are expected to meet:
- The Parent Night program will include information for parents about the state standards and making their children successful in school.
- Unsworth Elementary will inform parents about the CHARACTER COUNTS Program through an annual CHARACTER COUNTS assembly and regularly scheduled awards assemblies.
- Parent workshops may include, but are not limited to: Math, Reading, Writing, Homework Help, Technology, and California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) Prep.
- School Site Council (SSC) meetings.
- English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) meetings.
- District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC) meetings.
- Parent/Teacher Conferences.
- Unsworth Parents United.
Unsworth Elementary School teachers will all use a universal communication tool so that communication remains fluid throughout all grade levels:
- Teachers will use Parent Square as a tool to communicate with parents.
- The school will have a school-wide Parent Square account in place to send out updates and reminders.
Unsworth Elementary School will provide parents opportunities to participate in the decision-making process relating to the education of their children:
- Teachers and parents have the right to request a meeting to discuss the academic progress of students.
- During Student Study Team (SST) meetings, parents are invited to actively participate in the decision-making process.
- Teachers will keep parents informed of their child’s progress and provide the opportunity to discuss changes to the plan in place.
Unsworth Elementary School will submit to the District any parent comments if the School Plan under section (114)(b)(2) is not satisfactory to parents of participating children:
- Board Policy outlining the uniform complaint procedures can be found on the school website.
- Submission of comments will be made to the Categorical Director, and parents will be notified by the district for a conference.
Part 3: Shared Responsibilities for High Achievement
Building Capacity for Involvement
Unsworth Elementary School will build the school’s and parents’ capacity for strong parental involvement, in order to improve student academic achievement, through the following activities:
- Extend personal invitations to parents to volunteer in their child’s classroom, school, and PTA.
- Share techniques and strategies for promoting and supporting the education of their child at home as well as at school.
- Encourage school-wide Title I parents to participate in the advisory committees at the school level and district level.
- Ensure that communication between home and school is regular, two-way, and meaningful.
- Provide assistance to parents, as appropriate, in understanding such topics as the state’s academic content and achievement standards, and state and local academic assessments.
- Provide materials and training to help parents work with students to improve achievement, such as literacy training, math, and using technology as appropriate, to foster parental involvement.
- Maintain a school website, monthly calendar, and “Solar Power Reading” in order to provide information on a wide variety of topics, such as reinforcing academic skills at home and child development.
- Hold meetings at a variety of times in order to maximize the opportunities for parents to participate in school-related activities.
- Provide to parents, if requested, an opportunity for additional meetings.
The school will incorporate the School-Parent Compact as a component of its School Parental Involvement Policy:
- The School-Parent Compact is found on the school website. All families are asked to read and review it.
The school, with the assistance of the District, will provide parents with the following information in the following ways:
- The state’s Common Core Standards.
- Local student academic achievement goals.
- Local academic assessments, including alternate assessments.
- The requirements of Schoolwide Title I.
- How to monitor their child’s progress in reading using the monthly Solar Power Calendars.
- How to work with educators. This will be accomplished by providing workshops in reading, writing, and math, as well as Back to School Night, Open House, technology support, and parent conferences.
- Annual Title I review.
- District Transitional Kindergarten Program.
The school will, with the assistance of the District, provide parenting classes to the community in an effort to assist in promoting healthy parent-child interaction through resources such as:

The school will, with the assistance of the District and parents, educate its teachers, pupil services personnel, principals, and other staff in how to reach out to, communicate with, and work with parents as equal partners, emphasizing the value and utility of parent participation by:
- Informing teachers of school and District parent involvement policies.
- Discussing strategies for involving parents at regular staff meetings and District workshops.
The school will ensure that information related to school and parent programs, meetings, and other activities is sent to the parents of participating children in an understandable and uniform format. All information given to parents is translated into both English and Spanish, including:
- Monthly School Calendar
- Parent Square
- Blackboard (mass email, phone messages, text messages)
- Solar Power Reading
- Home/School Compact
- Parent and Family Engagement Policy
- Quarterly School Newsletter (translated copies available in the office)

Part 4: Adoption
This Parent and Family Engagement Policy has been developed jointly with, and agreed on with, parents of children participating in Title I, as evidenced by Mrs. Claudia Long.
This policy was approved and adopted by Unsworth Elementary School’s School Site Council in May 2025 and will be in effect for the 2025-2026 school year. The Parent and Family Engagement Policy will be available school-wide to all parents of students through our website and will be made available to the local community.
Notification to parents regarding this policy will be in an understandable and uniform format and, to the extent practicable, the school will provide a copy of this policy to parents in a language they can understand.
