Downey Unified School District is proud to implement a music program for the entire student population that begins in Transitional Kindergarten (TK). Throughout their educational journeys, students are exposed to a variety of programs and opportunities that allow them not only to grow in their academics but also in their individual development. One valuable form of curriculum comes from this unique chance for them to learn music regularly.
While music is often seen as a form of entertainment and mere enjoyment, it can also serve as a way for young children to increase their cognitive abilities. A five-year study conducted by the University of Southern California Brain and Creativity Institute revealed that music education and experiences in childhood can accelerate brain development, particularly in the areas of processing sound, language development, speech perception, and reading skills.
According to the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), music education increases children’s creativity, self-discipline, critical thinking, and self-esteem. It even enhances the development of abstract thinking skills. Additionally, through music programs, students can develop a sense of cultural heritage, allowing them to appreciate the emotions and experiences of others.
Exposing students to music instruction in early childhood also provides the following benefits:
- Allows the body and mind to work together
- Helps children learn the sounds and meanings of words
- Strengthens memory skills
- Improves social-emotional development as well as literacy, language, and motor skills
Our Downey Unified elementary music program aims to guide students to develop skills that will inspire them to become lifelong learners through creativity and musical expression. Students learn to think critically, problem-solve, and work as a team and are encouraged to develop responsibility, discipline, and creativity. Now, having an elementary teacher team that specifically focuses on music education, students in grades K–5 receive music instruction every other week throughout the entire school year, while TK students begin receiving formal music instruction in January. We are proud to bring music education into our classrooms in Downey Unified. We look forward to the vast horizons and further development our students will attain thanks to the expansion of these programs.
