IBMYP Service
Building a Stronger Global Community
Service and Action
Service Learning / Service as Action in the Units will happen in every class, building a connection to the world beyond the classroom and giving students the opportunity to give back to the local or global community.
IB MYP projects are informed by respected models of service learning and provide stepping stones toward the Diploma Programme’s core requirements for Creativity, Action and Service (CAS).
Types of Service Learning
Direct Action
When you personally interact with people, the environment, or animals to meet a need.
Indirect Action
Helping others without direct contact, often by organizing or creating.
Research
When you investigate an issue to understand it better and share what you learn to help others.
Advocacy
When you speak up or take action to promote a cause or bring attention to an issue.
What is the IB MYP Community Project?
In eighth grade, students in the IB MYP take on the Capstone Project. It is a student-led, service-learning experience designed to connect passion with purpose. Working in small groups, students identify a real need within their local or global community, then move through the stages of investigation, planning, action, and reflection. This project not only empowers students to explore their personal interests but also inspires them to make a meaningful impact through service as action.
As part of this experience, students will:
- Explore their role as active community members
- Identify real needs and design meaningful projects
- Take thoughtful, sustained action through inquiry
- Build skills in research, collaboration, and problem-solving
Project Requirements
- Complete an individual Process Journal on the Canvas Course.
- Approximately 15 hours of service with one or two more students.
- Meet with a supervisor at least 3 times.
- Create an exhibition display poster.
- Oral presentation at the Community Project Exhibit.
How Families Can Support Their IB MYP Student Projects

Celebrate Learning
Acknowledge your child’s achievements by attending the exhibit and celebrating their impact.
Be a Facilitator (Not Doer)
