Fuel Your Body. Feed Your Mind.

Fuel Your Body. Feed Your Mind.

March is National Nutrition Month®, a time to highlight the important role nutrition plays in our daily lives. With National School Breakfast Week (March 2–6) kicking off the month, it’s the perfect opportunity to spotlight how school meals support student success here at Downey Unified School District.

At Downey Unified, we believe every student deserves a strong start, and that begins with breakfast.

Why Breakfast Matters

Did you know?

  • Students who eat breakfast are more likely to concentrate and retain information.
  • Eating in the morning helps fuel memory, mood, and energy levels.
  • Kids who eat breakfast at school often consume more fruits, whole grains, and milk.

And the best part?
Every Downey Unified student can receive a FREE breakfast at school every single day. We have nutritious options ready to power the day!

Lunch Is Just as Important

Growing bodies and busy brains need consistent fuel! A balanced lunch helps students:

  • Maintain energy through the afternoon
  • Stay focused in class
  • Support overall growth and development

Fun fact: School lunches are required to meet strict federal nutrition guidelines, including limits on sodium, age-appropriate calories, and requirements for fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.

At Downey Unified, our meals go a step further. Our Food & Nutrition Services team works alongside a Registered Dietitian who carefully plans menus to ensure meals are both nutritious and delicious. From fresh produce to student-favorite entrées, we’re committed to serving food students are excited to eat.

Nutritious meals are one more way we support student success, both in and out of the classroom. When students are well nourished, they are better prepared to focus, participate, compete, create, and achieve their goals.
