February is an exciting time at Downey Unified as students, educators, and community members come together to celebrate STEAM. The district is committed to integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) into everyday learning. By fostering curiosity and innovation, Downey Unified prepares its students to excel in a rapidly evolving world.
STEAM: More Than Just Academics
STEAM education goes beyond traditional academic subjects. It teaches students to think critically, solve problems creatively, and collaborate effectively—skills essential for success in both higher education and the workforce. By blending technical expertise with artistic expression, STEAM encourages a balanced approach to learning, emphasizing not only innovation but also adaptability and empathy.
At Downey Unified, STEAM education is infused across all grade levels, with hands-on projects, engaging lessons, and opportunities to explore cutting-edge technology. From elementary school robotics clubs to high school coding challenges, students are given the tools and inspiration to pursue their passions.
Preparing Students for the Workforce
STEAM education isn’t just about preparing students for college—it’s about preparing them for life. Careers in STEAM fields are among the fastest-growing and highest-paying jobs in the global economy. By introducing students to concepts like computer programming, engineering design, and scientific research, Downey Unified ensures they have the skills to thrive in the 21st century.
The district’s commitment to STEAM ties seamlessly into our robust Career Technical Education (CTE) programs. These programs provide students with practical, career-oriented skills in fields such as healthcare, engineering, digital media, and advanced manufacturing. By combining STEAM learning with CTE, Downey Unified offers a unique and comprehensive approach to career readiness.
Career Technical Education at Downey Unified
Downey Unified’s CTE programs are designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world application. Through hands-on training, industry partnerships, and internships, students gain invaluable experience that sets them apart in competitive job markets.
For instance, the Engineering and Manufacturing pathways teach students to design and build innovative projects, while the Health Science and Medical Technology pathway prepares students for roles in healthcare—a field experiencing exponential growth. The integration of STEAM principles ensures that these programs remain dynamic and forward-thinking, equipping students with the technical skills and creative mindset needed for success.

Celebrating Innovation with a Day of Design 16.0

From February 18 through March 21, TK-5th grade students will have the chance to explore STEAM subjects by participating in hands-on projects. Students will read the book, A River of Dust, by Julianne Hoffman. This lyrical picture book is about the journey of dust from North Africa to the Amazon. Told from the dust’s perspective, it highlights how these tiny particles nourish the Amazon, showing earths interconnected systems. After reading, the students will use the engineering design process to construct their own satellite model. Students are encouraged to have fun, be curious, and let their curiosity soar!
Downey Unified School District remains committed to preparing students for whatever the future holds. Through its emphasis on STEAM education and Career Technical Education programs and pathways, the district ensures that our graduates are not only ready for college or the workforce but are also poised to become the next generation of leaders, innovators, and creators.
The future starts now—and it starts here at Downey Unified School District.
