Downey Unified School District is proud to announce that Imperial Elementary School has officially been renamed John A. Garcia Jr. Elementary School in honor of retiring Superintendent Dr. John A. Garcia Jr.
This meaningful name change recognizes Dr. Garcia’s incredible legacy and impact on Downey Unified for over 12 years. A proud Downey native and graduate of Downey Unified schools himself, Dr. Garcia returned to lead the district in 2013 after decades of service in public education. Since then, he’s championed major advancements in academic achievement, facility modernization, and student support programs—all grounded in his guiding belief that “our kids deserve the best.”
Dr. Garcia’s journey began humbly as a fifth-grade teacher and eventually led to district leadership roles across Southern California. But it was his return to Downey that brought his story full circle—serving the very community that shaped him, and ensuring students today have even greater opportunities to succeed.
Renaming a school in his honor is a lasting tribute to his unwavering dedication to Downey Unified’s students, families, and staff. We thank Dr. Garcia for his vision, leadership, and heart—and we’re excited for future generations of students to walk through the doors of Garcia Elementary and be inspired by his legacy.
