Though you may likely associate fall more closely with a certain squash spice, it’s also plum season!

Our partner, Old Grove Orange, is bringing plums to our lunchrooms! Beyond adding a taste of fall to our days, plums are a healthy treat full of antioxidants and can help us improve memory, along with brain, heart, and bone health. Plus, their natural sugar makes them sweet without needing to add a thing! A huge win in our book.

Did You Know?

  • Plums may have been one of the first fruits ever cultivated by humans.
  • Plums are part of the Rosaceae (rose) family, with relatives like peaches, cherries, apricots, and even almonds.
  • Plums come in a wide range of colors, with 2,000 varieties existing worldwide. What’s your favorite? Deep purple? Red? They even come in yellow and green!
  • Not all dried plums can become prunes. Most prunes come from varieties of European plums.
  • Bonus Fact: Many prunes are produced right here in California.

About Old Grove Orange

A group of more than 30 Southern California growers, Old Grove Orange partners with local school districts to bring fresh, locally sourced produce to students. Downey Unified School District has partnered with the organization since 2025.

Every week, Old Grove Orange selects one fruit to share and deliver to its partner school districts. We’ve loved working with them and watching our students get to experience new fruits every week! We look forward to seeing what’s next.
