Downey Unified’s Participation in the Upcoming Great California ShakeOut Day

Do you and your family know what actions to take in the event of an earthquake? In Downey Unified, we prioritize the safety and well-being of all our students and families, and we make joint efforts to help you know what actions to take in emergency situations.

The Great California ShakeOut is an annual event that encourages individuals throughout the entire state to ensure that they are prepared and equipped to protect themselves during an earthquake. This year’s ShakeOut Day will take place on Thursday, October 16, at 10:16 a.m. local time, with millions of people throughout California participating at work, school, and home.

In our commitment to making sure that all of our students and staff members know what to do to stay safe during an earthquake, Downey Unified will be taking part in ShakeOut Day, and we encourage all of our families to do so in their workplaces and at their homes, as well.  Our drill will be held at 9:00 a.m., not 10:16 a.m., to cause less disruption to the school day.

In preparation for the upcoming drill, we want to remind our families of the three most important tips one can remember during an earthquake: drop, cover, and hold on. Below are more details pertaining to what each step looks like in action.

Drop

Wherever you are, drop onto your hands and knees. This position will protect you from being knocked down and reduce your chances of being hit by falling or flying objects.

Cover

Use one arm and hand to cover your head and neck. Crawl underneath a sturdy desk or table for shelter if there is one nearby. If not, crawl next to an interior wall. Remain on your knees in a bent-over position to protect vital organs

Hold on

Until the shaking stops, hold on to the sturdy shelter, and move with your shelter if it shifts. If you don’t have a source of shelter, use both arms and hands to hold on to your head and neck.
