TK Builds the Foundation for Kindergarten and a Love of Learning

Starting school can feel like a big step for kids and parents. The good news? Transitional Kindergarten (TK) isn’t about worksheets or academic pressure. It’s about helping children grow socially, emotionally, and confidently through play, exploration, and meaningful interactions.

In the Downey Unified School District, we focus on the “soft skills” first because those are what truly set the stage for long-term success.

Beginning at age 4, students can start their school journey in our TK program, where they build independence, adjust to a classroom environment, and develop essential foundational skills, all in a nurturing, structured setting.

Our play-based approach encourages curiosity and helps children naturally build skills that prepare them for kindergarten and beyond.

Following simple directions:

Learning to listen, understand, and follow directions helps children feel confident and successful in the classroom and everyday situations.

Participating in class:

TK students practice raising their hands, asking questions, and joining group discussions, helping them feel comfortable and engaged in a classroom setting.

Building independence:

While students entering TK are already potty trained, we support them in building confidence handling routines like using the restroom independently, managing their belongings, and taking care of personal needs.

Decision-making and problem-solving:

Through guided play, structured activities, and peer interaction, students begin developing critical thinking skills, learning how to make choices and solve problems.

Social skills and friendships:

TK is where children learn to share, take turns, express emotions, and work with others, skills that are just as important as academics.
