Celebrate Culture and Creativity with the Downey Unified Mariachi Program

Mariachi is more than just music; it is a living history. With roots dating back to the 1700s, this unique ensemble of vocal styling and instrumental mastery connects today’s students with deep Mexican heritage and tradition.

Our mariachi program is designed to encourage creativity, build stage confidence, and foster a sense of pride as students represent their culture through performance.

A Program for Every Skill Level

We believe every student should have the chance to find their voice. To ensure everyone can participate, our program is divided into two distinct groups:

  • Beginner Group: No prior mariachi experience is required! This is the perfect starting point for students who want to learn the fundamentals of the genre.
  • Advanced Group: For those with previous mariachi experience or a demonstrated musical ability, this group focuses on complex arrangements and high-profile performances.

Membership Requirements

The program is open to all Downey Unified middle and high school students. To maintain the authentic sound and spirit of a mariachi ensemble, all participants must:

  • Sing and Play: Every member is a dual-threat performer, learning both an instrument and vocal techniques.
  • Commit to Excellence: Classes meet every Tuesday and Wednesday evening during the school year.
    • Beginner: 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm
    • Advanced: 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm
  • Earn Credit: High school students who participate in the program are eligible to earn course credit for their work!

Everything You Need to Succeed

We want to remove as many barriers as possible for our aspiring artists.

  • Instruments: Most instruments are provided by the district, though students are welcome to bring their own mariachi instruments if they have them.
  • Support: Students are responsible for their own transportation and should arrive at class prepared with water, comfortable clothes, and a positive, ready-to-learn attitude.

See the Program in Action at the Mariachi Festival

Our upcoming festival invites students from 6th grade through the college level to showcase their dedication to this genre. By seeing these “aspiring artists” take the stage, we hope to inspire our younger students to follow their passions and see where music can take them.
