Downey Unified is committed to supporting its students in every way possible to ensure a successful school year. One of the many ways it achieves this is through its amazing Food Services Department (that’s us!), which provides free nutritious meals daily (breakfast and lunch) to support students’ health and well-being.
You may be surprised to know that in addition to being delicious, having a school lunch helps improve student performance. Research shows that eating breakfast and lunch is linked with a reduction in nurse visits, improved attendance, better test scores, and a positive impact on the overall learning environment.
Who do we serve
Our department consists of over 200 people located at various sites across the district, including the District Office. We are dedicated to bringing smiles to our students’ faces by providing breakfast, 2nd chance breakfast, lunch, after-school snacks, supper, and a la carte sales to students, teachers, administrators, and staff. Our services are available at 13 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, 3 high schools, and 1 early education program.
A year in review
Last school year, our department served over 1.3 million breakfasts and 2.5 million lunches totaling over 3.8 million meals in the 2023-2024 school year. That’s over 21,000 meals every day!
We are prepared for the new school year and will be providing even more nutritious and delicious meals to our students.
Remember, healthier food leads to better grades. Eating a healthy breakfast in the morning is linked to improved concentration, increased energy, and better test scores. So, feel free to drop by and grab your free breakfast and lunch every day! Even if you bring your own meals, you are welcome to grab a healthy snack from us. We offer a daily salad bar with a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. There’s nothing to lose and everything to gain from picking up a meal. Enjoy!
