Simple + Fun Spring Break Ideas for Kids

While spring break may seem far away, April will be here before we know it. It’s never too early to start planning for ideas to keep your students entertained and help make sure that they have fun during their time off.

Many Downey Unified families are able to take trips together during spring break, but sometimes schedules, budgets, and other factors don’t allow for those getaways every year. Thankfully, there are still plenty of ways for kids to stay occupied during their week at home.

Make homemade cards for friends and family

Making cards for others is a simple activity that doesn’t involve many materials and creates crafts that bring smiles and warm hearts. It also allows students to practice their writing, communication, drawing, and coloring skills while doing something fun and meaningful.

Go on a neighborhood scavenger hunt

A scavenger hunt through the neighborhood might take a little more effort and involvement from parents, it’s a wonderful way for kids to use critical-thinking skills and completing tasks under pressure while also having an enjoyable time in an engaging activity.

Make a movie or play with friends or siblings

While students are away from the classroom setting, it’s important for them to keep their creative abilities sharp. When kids work on developing storylines, writing scripts, portraying characters, and presenting to an audience, they use essential skills that are beneficial in both the classroom and other areas of their lives. Plus, it’s entertaining for kids and parents alike.

Create an obstacle course

Whether it’s set up inside or outside, an obstacle course is a great way for kids to tap into their creativity, challenge themselves physically and mentally, and take part in an enjoyable activity either with friends and siblings or by themselves.

Go for a bike ride

Hopping on a bike on a sunny spring day is an ideal way to soak up some Vitamin D and enjoy the beautiful California weather while also taking part in a healthy physical activity. As an added bonus, there are plenty of gorgeous surroundings and nearby destinations to enjoy.

Make a meal together

Whether it’s peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, spaghetti, homemade pizza, or a more time-intensive meal like dumplings from scratch, making a meal together is not only a great way to spend quality time with one another but also helps kids learn valuable life skills (e.g., patience, cooperation, measuring, nutrition, etc.) that they can carry with them throughout their lives.

Have a bonfire with family and/or friends

Going to a bonfire pit together as a family or with friends to make s’mores and enjoy a cool spring evening with loved ones is a great way to make sure that kids not only stay entertained and have fun over the break but that they are also able to enjoy relaxing situations with the important people in their lives.

Whatever you and your family decide to do over the spring break holiday, we hope that you have a safe and enjoyable time and are excited to return to school refreshed and ready to finish off another incredible year.
