How to Make the Most of Back to School Night
Take this opportunity to ask questions.
Back-to-school night is the perfect place to ask your questions and don’t be worried about asking too many either. It shows that you are interested in your child’s education. Asking many questions will help you get a better idea about the teacher’s expectations, classroom rules and teaching style. However, try to keep the questions general. It is better to make an appointment for a teacher conference to discuss your specific concerns one-on-one.
Get a first-hand look at the classroom.
This might seem like a trivial thing, but it can also give you a lot of insight into the overall classroom atmosphere. The seating arrangement, decorations, and even the teacher’s personality can help you gauge if your child will thrive or even may need a little help.
Learn how to help your child at home.
This night provides you a chance to talk with their teacher about what you can do at home to better support your child, both academically and behaviorally. Teachers may be able to suggest supplemental resources or creative ideas that can help them outside of the classroom.
Opens up lines of communication.
One of the key factors to a good relationship is good communication. This is also true for a parent/guardian and teacher relationship. Establishing this relationship can start by simply getting to meet each other face-to-face which is why attending your child’s Back-to-School night is important with it being held earlier on in the school year. When people meet in person, it is generally easier to call or interact with them later on. This is a great chance to ask how and when you can contact your child’s teacher during the school year, and make sure they have the information necessary to be able to contact you.
While attending a back-to-school night is not mandatory, we highly recommend you come and learn information that may be pivotal for starting the school year on the right foot. It shows both your child and their teacher that you are invested in making this year a successful one.
