In early 1990\u2019s Dr. Mary\u2019s passion for education and philanthropy came together as the\u00a0<\/span>Mary R. Stauffer<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>Foundation, a private educational foundation she personally funded to give back to Downey, the community where she enjoyed a successful medical practice.<\/p>\n This image is of Dr. Mary holding a tape art portrait of herself. Born Mary Ruth Schuh in 1917, the founder was the fourth-generation daughter of Lutheran Ministers. She was an outstanding student both in elementary and secondary school, graduating valedictorian at Bexley High near Columbus Ohio. She went on to graduate top in her class at Capital University and Ohio State University College of Medicine. In 1943 she married Dr.\u00a0<\/span>Floyd Stauffer<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>and together raised their five children in Downey. In the early 1950\u2019s Dr. Mary opened her OB-GYN medical practice and was a pioneer in offering expecting mothers an educational program.<\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/maryrstaufferfoundation.org\/files\/2021\/02\/mary-portrait-tape-4x3-1.jpg\")
Over the years the foundation has donated over $6 million to student awards and innovative learning projects. In 2014, the Downey Unified School District renamed West Middle School to the\u00a0<\/span>Mary R Stauffer<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>Middle School. Now over 100 years old Dr. Mary still loves to visit with the students in Downey and will continue to inspire them through her foundation for many years to come.<\/p>\n
