It focuses on teaching students &#8220;how to learn&#8221; by mastering essential skills that apply to every subject. Through the AVID program, students learn to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Stay Organized: <\/strong>Managing assignments and time effectively.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Take Focused Notes:<\/strong> Developing better study habits and retention.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Think Critically: <\/strong>Asking meaningful questions and solving complex problems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Collaborate:<\/strong> Working with peers to build confidence and leadership.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Continuous Journey: The AVID Path of Advancement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We believe it is never too early to start thinking about the future. By verticalizing the AVID program, we ensure that the strategies a student learns in 5th grade are the same ones they will refine in high school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Elementary: Sparking the Dream<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the elementary level, we cultivate a &#8220;college-going culture.&#8221; You\u2019ll see this in our classrooms through college pennants, banners, and daily conversations about future careers. We are especially proud to announce that Gauldin and Ward Elementary officially launched the AVID program for all 5th graders! This early introduction helps students bridge the gap to middle school with total confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Secondary: Refining the Skills<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In middle and high school, AVID becomes an elective course where students dive deeper into academic rigor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Middle School: At schools like Stauffer, students are even using tools like the Gallup Strengths Champions assessment to identify their unique talents early on.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High School: The focus shifts to college eligibility. AVID students benefit from university-led tutoring, FAFSA assistance, and scholarship workshops.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Real-World Results: 97% College Acceptance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>The impact of AVID in Downey Unified is clear. Over the past 20 years, 97% of AVID students have been accepted to four-year universities. This success is fueled by hands-on experiences that make the &#8220;college dream&#8221; feel like a reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most recently, our Downey and Warren High School AVID Juniors completed ambitious &#8220;College Road Trips.&#8221; In March, these students visited eight universities in just four days, ranging from the San Francisco Bay Area to the North Coast. These tours allow students to see themselves on campus, meet with admissions officers, and visualize their lives after graduation.
