Warren High School\u2019s Bear Battalion<\/a> is a place to belong, to lead, to grow, and to prepare for college or a career. At its core, Army JROTC is a four-year leadership program designed \u201cto motivate young people to be better citizens.\u201d Grounded in the Army Values\u2014Leadership, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage\u2014JROTC programs share a common curriculum but reflect the unique strengths of each school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though still a newer program, Warren\u2019s Bear Battalion is full of energy and pride. Cadets are active across campus and in the Downey community, presenting colors and volunteering at events. Last year alone, the program logged more than 2,600 hours of community service, connecting service projects to classroom reflection through JROTC\u2019s Service Learning model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At WHS, Army JROTC counts for PE credit and a G-elective, and the team is working toward earning Arts credit through color guard, marching, and rifle drill performances. Cadets can also join the Raider Team, a high-intensity physical competition team, or explore STEM pathways through VEX Robotics, Cybersecurity, and Drone Teams\u2014including Warren\u2019s first-ever Drone Competition appearance this year!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bear Battalion thrives thanks to strong support from our principal, Dr. Cari White, Downey Unified’s vision, and community leaders like Superintendent, Dr. Roger Brossmer and Deacon Mario Guerra, whose vision brought this program to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Led by Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Iris Ramirez, the Battalion staff plans and runs events throughout the year. Leadership in JROTC focuses on service, respect, and collaboration\u2014not command and control. While rooted in military structure, there is no recruitment or enlistment obligation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JROTC instructors LTC Melissa Gardner and 1SG Ben Hicks bring over 50 years of Army experience and 21 years teaching JROTC, along with master\u2019s degrees and California teaching credentials. They welcome all students who want to grow, serve, and lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bear Battalion is proud to host the only Unified JROTC Color Guard in the area, partnering with special education students to promote inclusion and respect. JROTC also welcomes cadets involved in athletics, band, choir, drama, and other activities\u2014creating a true cross-section of Warren\u2019s student body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students, families, and staff are encouraged to learn more about how JROTC connects to Warren\u2019s vision of college and career readiness. Cadets can pursue ROTC scholarships, college opportunities, or career training through service to our nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
