While middle school students have become accustomed to changing classes and managing a school day schedule, moving up to high school can bring with it feelings of stress and apprehension. But it doesn\u2019t have to be a scary time for students, and at Downey Unified, we are here to offer encouragement and resources to ensure that this time is one of enjoyment and growth for all our students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are several ways for families to support their students as they transition from middle to high school, some of which we have explored below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Encourage open communication \u2014<\/strong> Families can serve as safe spaces for their adolescent kids, and maintaining open lines of communication can help students feel a sense of comfort and ability to share their feelings and struggles they are experiencing. It will also allow families to better understand their students and have more insight into what\u2019s going on in their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Set realistic expectations \u2014<\/strong> Families can help their students set goals and work toward achieving them, modeling the importance of celebrating small victories along the way. It\u2019s important to have conversations regarding putting forth best efforts and learning to grow from failures when they do occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Support participation in extracurricular activities \u2014<\/strong> Taking part in extracurricular activities helps students not only make new friends and learn communication and time-management skills but also allows them to explore various interests and develop passions that can build foundations and prepare them for their futures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Encourage self-advocacy \u2014<\/strong> High school is a great time for students to grow in their independence and learn to speak up for themselves and take responsibility for their own actions. An increase in independence allows them to develop essential life skills, including time management, self-discipline, and decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Offer access to resources \u2014<\/strong> During their adolescent years, students experience an array of emotions, and making such a significant change in their lives can bring feelings of anxiety and being overwhelmed at times. Families can help support their children during this time not only by offering resources such as planners to keep track of schedules and tutoring materials to stay on top of academics but also by providing resources pertaining to mental health and managing stress.
