As the district\u2019s <strong>Registered Dietitian (RD)<\/strong>, Lily oversees everything from menu planning to ingredient sourcing, making sure each breakfast, lunch, snack, and supper meets federal and state nutrition standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her ultimate goal? To provide balanced, nutritious, and appealing meals that not only meet dietary guidelines but also reflect the diverse tastes and cultural preferences of our students. \u201cI want every child to have access to wholesome food that fuels their day,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.dusd.net\/foodservices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2025\/10\/Lily_I-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6894\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A typical day for Lily includes collaborating with food service staff to refine recipes, working with vendors to source high-quality ingredients, and accommodating special dietary needs related to allergies or medical conditions. She also keeps a close eye on food safety, nutritional data, and student feedback to continually improve the meal experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:25% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.dusd.net\/foodservices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2025\/10\/thumbnail_IMG_5018_web.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6895 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>One of the changes Lily is most proud of is the <strong>modernization of digital menu boards<\/strong> at our high schools, allowing students to easily explore daily options. She\u2019s also excited about introducing new, flavorful recipes made with fresh, high-quality ingredients like the <strong>BBQ brisket sandwich<\/strong>, featuring tender sliced beef brisket on a fluffy La Brea Bakery telera roll with homemade coleslaw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to nutrition, Lily emphasizes the importance of meals that provide <strong>adequate protein, fiber, vitamins, and balanced carbohydrates<\/strong> to sustain energy and focus. \u201cFruits and vegetables play a vital role by providing key nutrients and antioxidants that support overall health and establish positive eating habits,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to nutrition, Lily emphasizes the importance of meals that provide <strong>adequate protein, fiber, vitamins, and balanced carbohydrates<\/strong> to sustain energy and focus. \u201cFruits and vegetables play a vital role by providing key nutrients and antioxidants that support overall health and establish positive eating habits,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Her personal menu favorites? The <strong>tomato bisque soup<\/strong>, <strong>baja fish street tacos<\/strong>, and <strong>tamales with salsa verde sauce<\/strong>\u2026plus the local farm-fresh strawberries when they\u2019re in season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for the most nutrient-packed choices, Lily points to dishes like <strong>Beef Rotini<\/strong>, made with 51% whole grain pasta and lean grass-fed&nbsp;beef from a local regenerative farm, served alongside steamed broccoli and a trip to the salad bar for even more color and variety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lily believes the <strong>ideal lunch<\/strong> for students includes lean protein, whole grains, plenty of vegetables, and fruit paired with water or milk. For breakfast, she recommends choosing a good source of protein, like our freshly made Greek yogurt parfait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her advice for students? \u201cEat a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables every day, and be open to trying new flavors. You might discover something delicious that\u2019s also good for you!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.dusd.net\/foodservices\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2025\/10\/thumbnail_IMG_4998.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6896\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And for parents: \u201cFocus on balanced meals with whole foods and limit processed snacks.
