During the visit, the Governor spoke with Superintendent Dr. Brossmer, members of the Board of Education and staff about Downey Unified\u2019s ongoing work to support student success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was an honor to welcome Governor Newsom to Stauffer Middle School and share the meaningful work taking place across Downey Unified,\u201d Board President Jose Rodriguez said. \u201cTo have our district selected for recognition from among 935 districts statewide is an incredible honor and a reflection of the dedication of our students, educators, staff and families. This recognition belongs to our entire Downey Unified community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.dusd.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/DSC00015_-1024x572.jpg\" alt=\"State and Downey Unified leaders participate in a roundtable discussion during the Governor\u2019s visit to Stauffer Middle School.\" class=\"wp-image-24502\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.7902250016994086;width:431px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Recognizing Downey Unified\u2019s Progress<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the State\u2019s official announcement, Downey Unified was recognized for gains across English Language Arts, Mathematics and Science. The percentage of students demonstrating proficient or advanced grade-level knowledge and skills increased by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2.1 percentage points in English Language Arts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2.8 percentage points in Mathematics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>4.7 percentage points in Science<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The State also highlighted the intentional work behind this progress, including strengthening instruction and academic rigor, aligning graduation requirements with A\u2013G expectations, expanding career technical education and learning opportunities, investing in inclusive special education practices, and providing academic, social-emotional and basic-needs support for students and families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Shared Districtwide Accomplishment<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the Governor\u2019s visit took place at Stauffer Middle School, this recognition reflects the collective work happening across all Downey Unified schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our progress is made possible by the dedication of our students, teachers, staff, administrators, labor partners, families, Board of Education and the greater Downey community. Every school and department plays an important role in our shared commitment to helping students learn, grow and prepare for their futures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Superintendent Dr. Brossmer shared with the State, improving student outcomes is a long-term commitment. While we are incredibly proud of the progress our students are making, we remain focused on continuing this work and ensuring every Downey Unified student has the opportunities and support needed to succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBeing selected for recognition from among 935 school districts is an extraordinary honor, but the greatest achievement is the progress our students are making.
