Between preparing delicious food, adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies, and offering service with a smile, Downey Unified Food Services professionals have a lot on their plate. To celebrate their hard work and commitment, Downey Unified schools will celebrate School Lunch Hero Day on May 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This day, celebrated annually since 2013, was designated by The School Nutrition Association and Jarrett Krosoczka, author of the \u201cLunch Lady\u201d graphic novel series. School Lunch Hero Day provides an opportunity for parents, students, school staff and communities to thank those who provide healthy meals to nearly 30 million of America\u2019s students each school day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across the school district, school nutrition professionals were honored and recognized by students, school staff, parents and the community. We gave every Food Services staff member a small goodie bag and we encouraged all members of our Downey Unified community to thank our Food Services team for all that they do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Downey Unified Food Service staff work hard to ensure all students have access to tasty, safe and nutritious meals at school,\u201d said Marc Milton, Director of Food Services. \u201cThese heroes deserve to be celebrated and School Lunch Hero Day gives us an additional opportunity to thank our hardworking Food Service staff for their dedication to fueling our students so they are ready to learn and achieve success every day!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Federal nutrition standards ensure that school cafeterias always offer low-fat or fat-free milk, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein. School meals also meet limits on calories, sodium and unhealthy fats. In Downey Unified, we offer vegetarian options daily and salad bars, featuring fresh produce at all school sites. The importance and nutritional value of school meals are well documented. For many children, school lunch is the most important and nutrient-rich meal of their day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
