{"id":6421,"date":"2023-01-09T11:39:11","date_gmt":"2023-01-09T19:39:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.dusd.net\/foodservices\/?p=6421"},"modified":"2023-01-11T20:08:19","modified_gmt":"2023-01-12T04:08:19","slug":"the-benefits-of-milk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.dusd.net\/foodservices\/blog\/2023\/01\/09\/the-benefits-of-milk\/","title":{"rendered":"The Benefits of Milk"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This January, we&#8217;re celebrating the many benefits of milk and how it, and dairy overall, helps keep our bodies strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Protein and Vitamins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While there are different types of milk (whole, 2%, skim, etc.), generally milk provides us with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Protein<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Calcium<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vitamins A, D, and B12<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Potassium<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Phosphorus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And more<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/functions-of-protein\" target=\"_blank\">Protein<\/a> is key to keeping us energized and promotes the growth of muscle mass. It can also help us feel full longer. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/nutrition-and-healthy-eating\/in-depth\/calcium-supplements\/art-20047097#:~:text=The%20benefits%20of%20calcium,diabetes%20and%20high%20blood%20pressure.\" target=\"_blank\">Calcium<\/a> is needed for building and maintaining strong bones. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements-vitamin-a\/art-20365945\" target=\"_blank\">Vitamin A<\/a> helps our vision and keeps our skin healthy. Like calcium, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements-vitamin-d\/art-20363792\" target=\"_blank\">vitamin D<\/a> is also important for your bones. It also supports immune health and muscle function. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/nutritionsource\/vitamin-b12\" target=\"_blank\">Vitamin B12<\/a> is needed in our bodies to form red blood cells and produce DNA. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/nutritionsource\/potassium\/\" target=\"_blank\">Potassium<\/a> helps our bodies maintain fluid levels in our cells. It is critical and needed by all of our body tissues. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/phosphorus-in-diet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Phosphorus<\/a> is another key mineral we need for bone health. It also assists with energy production, muscle movement, and filtering waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Much Milk Should I Drink?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) includes milk in the Dairy Food Group, along with yogurt, cheese, lactose-free milk, and fortified soy milk and yogurt. Next time you grab lunch, we hope you&#8217;ll get some milk to go along with it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alternatives<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We know that some students may have a lactose allergy.
